amore scientiae facti sunt exulesThe ASFE project, originally set up to monitor the University of Bologna’s student population from 1500 to 1800 was based on different sources; this was due both to the nature and purpose of student registers that used to record the members of different nationes instead of student attendance, and to the fact that most original records were lost, and could no longer be retrieved. The project gathers all relevant data in one single database that includes all the variables available in the different sources (e.g. name, surname, birthplace/place).
The original project progressively was extended to cover details regarding the other university sites attended by University of Bologna’s students. The focus thus moved on student mobility in Italian universities and abroad and the number of records registered in the database increased from 30,000 to 130,000.
It is thus possible to identify three research themes that highlight different aspects of the history of Italian universities in modern times:
