The work on this university database started with the aim to make a census of the student population of the University of Bologna, and was consequently extended to the study of peregrinatio academica towards the main Italian universities in the early modern age.

The magnitude of the data recorded (roughly 130,000 records from 1500 to the 1800) allowed the conception of three research themes, documenting the role that the main Italian universities played in the scholarly education of the élites.
